User can choose the space repetition algorithm

Right now, the algorithm is by default like this: 1. 90 sec 2. 30 min 3. 12 h 4. 2 days 5. 2 weeks 6. 2 months It would be perfect if the user can modify the algorithm. For example I like it this way: 4 h - 12 h - 2 day - 1 week - 2 weeks - 2 months

yeah, I really don't like the frequency pace. it would be nice if we can adjust it somehow.

Other apps leave it up to the user to decide how they want to handle repetitions. This would be the cleverest decision. I would love it! Personally, for instance, I don't want to see a card 20 times in a single day just because I can't memorize it. A new day brings a fresh start, so it's enough to see the card at the next day.

Hello, I would like to draw your attention to an important aspect regarding the third stack of cards — the one that contains fully learned items. In practice, this stack includes two different types of cards: — Cards that are still in the queue for a future review and will appear again at some point. — Cards that will never be shown again and are permanently removed from the repetition schedule. Because both of these types are combined into a single category, certain difficulties arise when using filters. Specifically, when I enable the option “include known cards” in the filter, all learned cards are displayed — including those that are still scheduled to appear, even if that happens in a month. I verified this carefully, and the filter currently behaves exactly this way. However, in many situations, it is necessary to filter only those cards that are truly completed, have their “battery” fully filled, and are excluded from the review schedule. At the moment, there is no way to isolate them. Therefore, I kindly ask you to consider one of the following improvements: Either split the third stack into two separate categories: — cards that will still appear; — cards that will never be shown again; Or add a separate checkbox to the filter that would allow displaying only those fully learned cards that are not in the queue for another review, meaning the truly completed ones. Such an enhancement would significantly improve the accuracy and convenience of working with learned cards. Thank you for your attention. I would greatly appreciate it if you could consider this improvement. Best regards, Vitalii

I've been using this app for over a year now, learning two languages, and have a subscription. First of all, I want to thank the DuoCards team, you're the best. But I really miss the personal touch of the algorithm. As mentioned above, sometimes a word can't be repeated. You can, of course, set the filter to "show learned cards," but when there are too many, you have to repeat them all.

Hello, this is more about the space repetition algorithm so I am merging it with the appropriate post: https://duocards.canny.io/feature-requests/p/user-can-choose…

Hi, thank you for sharing your insight! I’m going to merge this post with the similar one below to keep things organized: https://duocards.canny.io/feature-requests/p/user-can-choose…

I am not sure if I fully understand your request, could you please describe it in more detail?

You see, there is a smart algorithm which pops up cards according to how long ago they were last viewed and whether I swipe them left or right. I'm constantly finding myself in the same situation: I have hundreds of cards, but can't view any of them because they are all too "fresh", i.e. the algorithm "thinks" that I have gone through them recently. A good feature would be just "unhide" a bunch of cards eventhough they were not supposed to be shown yet according to The Smart Algorithm. Also the algorithm appears to consider a card "finished" (learned) after certain amount of time and will not show it anymore, however, that's not the case - I forget most cards after a month or two. The algorithm is way too smart and it doesn't really work in practice - it's just getting in my way. PS. I apologise my language - was quite frustrated yesterday when I had especially dedicated time for learning cards, but the app refused to show me any.

Nikolai: We have a similar request here: https://duocards.canny.io/feature-requests/p/user-can-choose… So I would like to merge your post to this one, so it can be all together.

Hi Elvis, thank you for sharing your insight! We already have an "User can choose the space repetition algorithm" suggestion in place, so I’m going to merge yours with it to consolidate votes and keep things organized.

I think you could add an option bringing cards more often to learn, I want to revew a card but It says "30 days until return back " even if it apeard a few times not good enought memorize. Please you should add a manageable time for the decks to return.

Hi, thanks for your post! A similar idea is already on Canny, so I'm merging it into the existing post to consolidate votes and keep everything organized. ✌️ Sasha from DuoCards

I agree with what JamOnDrums wrote, that "repeat period should depend on the user and their previous scores on a particular card. but I definitely think that the durations should not be completely fixed but should adapt to the learner. " Harder cards should be displayed more often than easy cards, as this is how most flashcard learning programs work. Intervals cannot be fixed, as the learning effectiveness will be low. Instead of fixed, uniform intervals for all cards, a single coefficient should be introduced for each card individually, calculating the time of the next repetition. With an incorrect answer, the coefficient decreases (the card is shown more often), with a correct answer, it increases. It works like this: the previous learning interval multiplied by the coefficient (K) equals the new interval. Example with correct answer (for a selected card): for K = 2, n=0.3 If interval >1 day K=K+n K=2+03=2.3 1 * 2. 3= 2.3 (days) correct answer K=2.3+0.3=2.6 2. 3* 2.6 = 5.98 (days) correct answer K=2.6+0.3=2.9 5.98* 2.9 = 17.34 (days) correct answer K=2.9+0.3=3.2 17.34* 3.2 = 55.48 (days) With an incorrect answer: We start learning from the beginning. Intervals: 90 seconds 30 minutes If intervals >=1 day incorrect answer K=3.2-0.3=2.9 1*2.9=2.9 days incorrect answer K=2.9-0.3=2.6 1*2.6=2.6 days incorrect answer K=2.6-0.3=2.3 1*2.3=2.3 days This is only example.

Hi Tatiana, thank you for your comment! You can adjust how often the words appear by swiping left instead of right if you want to see the word again sooner.🙌 Other than that, a similar idea is already on Canny, so I’m merging your post with the existing one, 'User can choose the spaced repetition algorithm,' to consolidate votes and keep things organized.✌️Michaela from DuoCards

This sounds like a power-user feature. And Anki is already free

Jan 7, 2025

I feel like the repeat period should depend on the user and their previous scores on a particular card. but I definitely think that the durations should not be completely fixed but should adapt to the learner. The user choosing their own intervals might not be the way to go as it could depend on the card you are tying to learn

Jan 5, 2025

I really agree because although space repitition is used, I need to be able to choose more regular intervals for those words that Duo thinks I've remembebered long-term and won't show for a very long time, when I'd benefit from another recall perhaps in a month's time. This means my hard work for learning some of the words doesn't effectively carry through for the long-term which is frustrating.

Jan 4, 2025

From my experience - I would reduce long 'few-month' period. I am not sure what actual value is - 2 or 3 month but I have forgotten number of cards during this period and suppose shortening this repeat-period would be good. But it is my feeling - it may be different for different people

Dec 31, 2024

Hi Mochaela Reapeting a word and learning it again are two different things . The algoritm should be more optimized for the path of learning or a user should have option to choose intervals. I have read several times on reddit that your algoritm is not perfect and other apps have better one but still wanted to do you a chance. But they are right. With such intervals nobody will learn anything for a long time

Dec 31, 2024

I got it, but make cards return after 1 or some years is definitely more convenient btw

Nov 20, 2024

Hi Honza! You can practice words already in the "Learned" folder by using the filter feature and selecting "Include Known Cards." Another option is to reset a card's progress. To do this, click on the three dots on the right in your personal deck and choose "Reset." I am attaching screenshots for better navigation. ;) Michaela from DuoCards

Jan 19, 2025

Hi Michaela! The problem with that approach is that I don't want to study all the "known" cards at the same time; would it be possible to expand the repetition algorithm to include two extra steps: one after 5 months, and one after 1 year. Once the after 1 year is completed, that would indicate a good knowledge of the word. Thanks for the work in the App! :)
